The Challenge to Gather

There is something special about this time of year that tends to bring people together.  For some, it’s sharing the joy of the Christmas season with the ones you love. For others, it’s the excitement of the lights, parties and chance of snow that gives an extra pep in your step as you count down the days until Christmas.  Regardless of what motivates you, the process of gathering together is important.

There are many reasons we should gather together during this time of year.  Not the least of which, includes our mental well-being.  According to Psychology Today, “Regular face-to-face interaction helps lower stress, boost mood, and increase emotional resilience. When we connect with others, our bodies release oxytocin and dopamine—two powerful chemicals that promote feelings of happiness and well-being.” At a time in our culture when stress levels are at an all-time high, we need every little bit of help that we can muster!

So, make plans to gather with those who feed your soul. For those of you who are already seeing color schemes and party themes in your head, let me encourage you to hold that thought. As exciting as it can be for some of us to turn our get-togethers into an event and love every minute of it (I know you, because I am you!) - the truth is, togetherness doesn’t have to be scripted.  This is one area of our lives where simplicity and organic relationship opportunities can be most beautiful.

Beauty is in togetherness, but making it happen isn’t always easy.  Here are some ideas for how to make togetherness opportunities that will feed your soul and bonus ideas for those who just can’t keep themselves from adding a little “party” aspect!

Have a Christmas Movie Night with Friends or Family.

Bonus: Popcorn is cheap and easy. Everyone can even bring their own $ box of candy!

Meet at a coffee shop with friends.

Bonus: Share your favorite Christmas Candy recipes

Have a Girl’s Gift Wrap Get-Together.

Bonus: Everyone brings their gifts and wraps together, while visiting and drinking hot cocoa.

Walk the mall with a buddy and window shop as you get your steps in.

Bonus: Deals can be best seen with multiple sets of eyes!

Drive around the neighborhood with your hubby and look at Christmas lights.

Bonus: Take the kids and stop for your favorite ice cream or custard on the way home.

Have a meal with someone who is shut-in.

Bonus: Ask them about their favorite Christmas memories and traditions.

Plan a breakfast, lunch or dinner around your table.

Bonus: Make your family’s favorite things.  There is nothing like food that will bring a family together to create the most organic conversations. And there is nothing that will feed a mother’s soul like having her family surrounding the table.

So there you have it!  You have been challenged to be intentional and make time to be together with those who feed your soul.  What will you do with the challenge?  Our hope is that your response will be “Challenge accepted!”
